What We Look For

Admission to Winchester ABC is a challenging process.  Our program is designed for highly talented students of color who have the desire to prepare for a college education and to become leaders in life. Applicants should be at the top of the class in their current schools. Our previous scholars have come to Winchester from public middle schools in urban and suburban settings, charter schools and parochial schools.

Applicants must be in the top ranks of their classes and demonstrate strong academic motivation, as well as the willingness to adjust to life in a new community, which is often very different from their previous experience. Following tests and interviews by the national ABC program, successful candidates are referred to local chapters for further interviews and selection.

As we review the applications that we receive from the national ABC program, we begin by asking the question, “What makes a successful ABC scholar?” We look for specific criteria that include the following: academic achievement, including test scores and grades,  excellence as reflected in recommendations, demonstrated leadership skills, readiness to leave home, and strengths and passions apart from academics. We look for young men who aspire to take an active role at school, in the ABC house, and in the greater Winchester community.

The Application Process

Middle school guidance counselors, principals, and teachers from public schools across the country recommend candidates to the staff of the national office of A Better Chance. Applicants must be in the top rank of their class and demonstrate strong academic motivation, as well as the willingness to adjust to life in a new community, which is often very different from the one they leave behind. Following tests and interviews by the national ABC program, successful candidates are referred to local chapters for further interviews and selection.
